Ethiopia has pardoned an estimated 4,500 prisoners during the festivities commemorating the ’founding of the true cross’ in recognition of the place where Jesus Christ was crucified, APA learnt here on Sunday.

The prisoners were freed Saturday as millions of Ethiopian orthodox christians commemorated the event.

Official sources say unconditional pardons was extended to 4,5000 prisoners mostly from the Southern region and foreigners from neighbouring countries who were imprisoned for various crimes.

The Southern Ethiopian regional state information bureau said that the prisoners receive the pardon due to their behavioural change while in prison.

Prisoners with charges of rape and murder were exempted from the clemency.

Sources said the pardoned prisoners were also given crime protection education to avoid becoming recedivists.
