GURI EL, Somalia June 28 (Garowe Online) – Heavy fighting erupted Saturday night in central Somalia between Ethiopian troops backing the country’s secular interim government and Islamist rebels, Radio Garowe reported.

Both sides were using heavy weapons, including artillery and rockets, during the battle in the town of Guri El, residents said.

Mohamed Shire Omar, a Guri El resident, told Radio Garowe that locals had fled in all directions as the fighting raged into the night.

Ethiopian troops arrived in Guri El town earlier Saturday, after withdrawing from the town of Beletwein where Islamic Courts fighters took control. [ Full story]
