AUC welcomes Australian proposal to open embassy in Addis Ababa

Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU) Jean Pin, on behalf of the commission, has welcomes the Australian government’s proposal to open an embassy in Addis Ababa

The proposal was announced by Stephen Smith MP, Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the occasion of Africa Day celebration held in Canberra, Australia on Tuesday, AU said in a statement released on Thursday.

The proposal is most auspicious considering the growing diplomatic engagement and cooperation between Australia and the Africa Union in recent times. No doubt, the Embassy, when established, will consolidate and advance the ties between the two sides, the statement said.

The commission commends the Australian government for this bold initiative, which amply demonstrates the friendship and collaboration that have characterized relations between Australia and the African Union.

Conscious of this, the commission, on behalf of the African Union, commits itself to working closely with the Embassy when it is established, in order to promote the existing friendship and enhance the growing sphere of cooperation between Australia and the AU, the statement added.
