Ethiopian Student receives $25K grant for study of hip-hop’s ‘healing potential’

AMHERST – Elias Aba Milki was moved to learn English because of his love for hip-hop when he was growing up in Ethiopia.That passion has stayed with him as his love for medicine and health has deepened.

Now Milki, 21, will be combining his loves in a year of travel and study as he investigates how hip-hop can help poor people heal from a myriad of ills.

Milki, an Amherst College senior, was recently awarded a $25,000 Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, enough money for his year abroad. He was one of just 40 undergraduates nationwide to receive the award.
