Addis Ababa – Messeret Defar is better known as a 5000-meter runner, being a former world record holder and a 2004 Olympic gold medalist and 2007 World Champion in that event has made a Bid to Represent Ethiopia in the 10,000, RUNNUR’S world reported.
According to the report Messeret has a “bye” into the 5000 at the World Championships in August, but she wants to make the Championships in the 10,000 as well, and will be racing on Saturday at the Aviva World Trials and UK Championships in Birmingham.
“The race in Birmingham is important for me as I want to show my selectors in Ethiopia that I am capable of running well in the 10,000m in Berlin. There are many good long distance women in Ethiopia, so I must put in a strong performance,” Says Meseret.
In fact, she may have to run well under 30:30.
The 2004 Olympic silver medalist Ejegayehu Dibaba, sister of 2008 Olympic 5000 and 10,000-meter champ Tirunesh Dibaba, will also be in the 10,000 in Birmingham, along with fellow Ethiopian Aheza Kiros, Lineth Chepkurui of Kenya, and British distance stars Hatti Dean, Claire Hallissey and Gemma Miles.
