APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Ethiopia on Sunday held its 38th athletics championships as part of its preparations for the 6th IAAF World Youth Championships to be held in Suditirol, Italy and the 12th IAAF World Championships to be held in Berlin, Germany.
Sunday’s championships were the first chance in the domestic campaign to see Ethiopia’s top prospects with tens of thousands of people attending the event at the Addis Ababa stadium.
The men’s and women’s 5,000 and 10, 0000 meter races attracted the attention of many sports men and women where the athletes showed great enthusiasm to compete.
Athlete Gebreegziabhere Gebremariam, who won the 10,000 meter title in 2007, repeated his victory during the championship, but he was closely challenged by defending champion Eshetu Wondimu, who has since turned his attention to the marathon and ran 2:08.02 to finish third in the Dubai Marathon in January.
In the corresponding women’s race, Genzebe Dibaba, the younger sister of athlete Tirunesh Dibaba registered a victory after a strong challenge from other women athletes.
Ayele Abshiro, the men’s world junior cross country winner, also performed well in the 5,000 meter men’s race.
These athletes who won at the championship will represent Ethiopia at this year’s IAAF world championships in Italy and Germany.
