Ethiopia’s Dinkesa wins over Kenyan and Eritrean favorites in Edinburgh

Ethiopia’s multiple Olympic and world champion Kenenisa Bekele did not attend the Great Edinburgh race in the Scottish capital but countryman Abebe Dinkesa still managed to bring gold to Ethiopia. The 24 year old Dinkesa won the 8.9km race in 26 minutes 51 seconds.
With Kenenisa not participating in this year’s race, the attention was focused on Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge and Eritrea’s Zersenay Tadese. But the winner of the 2004 Great Ethiopia Run, Dinkesa shrugged off his injuries to upset the race favorites.
Meanwhile, Kenya’s Mangata Ndiwa outsprinted Eritrea’s Zersenay to take second place in 26:54. Eliud finished in fourth place.
Abebe Dinkesa’s previous big win came from the African Championships in the Republic of Congo in 2004 where he took second place finishing in 28:10:49
